5 New Ways To Live Greener
By Eduardo Dieguez —
The green movement has taken over with people of all walks of life moving towards a more sustainable life style that provides hope for future generations. While many parts of the green movement are popular and well-known such as recycling programs and alternative forms of energy, there are also some lesser known ways of going green which will be the focus of this article. Here are five new ways to live greener than you may have in the past.
Back-Yard and Container Gardening
Growing your own food is healthier than many packaged foods and also reduces the waste that is inherent in an industrialized food system. If you are looking to go greener, start a backyard garden. If you are living in an apartment and do not have access to a backyard, many vegetables and herbs can be grown in containers in your house. Growing your own food is good for you and good for the environment.
Locally Sourced Items
A global economy has imparted numerous benefits upon people around the planet including rising living conditions and an expansion of cultural horizons. However, increased globalization has also led to increased waste from transportation of goods from one location to another. Live greener by purchasing locally sourced items that do not lead to the material waste that occurs from the transportation of items in accordance with a global economy.
Sleep Well In Good Conscious
Mattresses are sometimes made with a variety of different plastics and processed materials which do not biodegrade in a timely manner and which can cause significant harm to the environment over the long-term. Select a mattress that is made primarily from biodegradable and other organic materials. Studies have shown that these organic materials will often contribute to a reduction in allergy and other health issues that are connected to mattress use so using a mattress that is made from bio-degradable materials may not only be good for the environment. It may be good for your health as well.
Move Close to Work
Many people spend significant amounts of time and money commuting to work on a daily basis. By moving closer to work the transportation costs that you may use heading to work will be lower and less gas will be used in the process, which is a great green initiative. If you live close enough, consider biking to work every day. You will not only feel healthier but will be living greener in the process.
Reusable Containers
The environment is harmed by the waste inherent in using disposable containers. Not only are plastic bottles harmful to the environment, they are also unnecessary. Use a reusable bottle to reduce the waste and convert this to other areas as well. Use reusable shopping bags instead of plastic or paper bags. Look for other ways to use less disposable items throughout your life.
Conclusion
While the green movement has been taking off in recent years there are a number of different new ways to live greener by adopting certain lifestyle choices. By purchasing locally produced items, growing your own food, and by using bio-degradable or recyclable items, you will be living greener in a way that can contribute to your overall health and to your wallet.
